Loss is a word most commonly associated with death, but in reality, loss and grief can take many different forms throughout our lives. It may be the loss of the structure and routine that comes with retirement, the loss of a job, the end of a relationship, children leaving home for university, or the loss of a familiar way of life. These moments often challenge our sense of identity, security, and purpose.
When life changes, it is natural to experience a wide range of emotions. Loneliness, worry, sadness, shock, overwhelm, and frustration can all emerge as we try to adjust to a new reality. Many of us struggle because we feel we should simply “move on” or cope alone. However, when feelings of loss are left unsupported, they can begin to affect motivation, confidence, sleep, relationships, and overall wellbeing.
Loss, grief, and life transitions are an unavoidable part of human life, but they do not have to be faced alone. Counselling can provide valuable support by offering a non judgemental space to explore emotions openly and honestly. It can help bring greater self understanding, ease emotional pressure, reduce feelings of isolation, and build resilience and hope for the future.
