Humans don’t always speak kindly to themselves. Anxiety often affects more than our thoughts and emotions — it can also shape the way we speak to ourselves. Many people living with anxiety experience an inner voice that is critical, demanding, or unkind. Over time, this internal dialogue can begin to affect confidence, self-esteem, and emotional wellbeing.
Anxiety and self-criticism often work together in a cycle, with anxious thoughts shaping the way we speak to ourselves, while our inner critical voice can intensify feelings of anxiety.
Interestingly, most of us would never speak to a friend in the same harsh way we speak to ourselves. Think about the last time you comforted someone, reassured them, or praised something they had done well. For many people, kindness towards others comes naturally. Yet when it comes to offering that same compassion to ourselves the conversation inside our own minds is often far less gentle.
When anxiety is present, self-criticism can become automatic. We may question ourselves constantly, focus on perceived mistakes, or place unrealistic expectations on ourselves. This can leave us feeling emotionally exhausted and stuck in cycles of worry and self-doubt.
One helpful first step is simply becoming more aware of how you speak to yourself. When you notice self-critical thoughts, pause and consider what you might say to a friend in the same situation. Would you judge them so harshly, or would you respond with understanding and encouragement? Trying to offer those same kinder words to yourself can begin to shift the way you relate to your anxiety.
Counselling can provide a supportive space to explore these patterns in greater depth. It offers an opportunity to better understand anxiety, build self-awareness, and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself. Over time, this can help reduce emotional overwhelm and support greater confidence, resilience, and self-acceptance.

If anxiety or self-critical thinking is affecting your daily life, counselling can help you feel more supported and less alone in what you are experiencing.
